This Merlot from Giuseppe Rizzardi is grown on Veronese soils too heavy in clay for Corvina. First released in 2006 it’s now much sought after. Here the power of Merlot shines; there’s bramble, toast, tobacco, a good lick of French oak, firm tannins, lovely spice and a tingle of VA.

Clos Roareti

Giuseppe Rizzardi and the Return to Family Properties

Winemaker and family member Giuseppe Rizzardi returned to the family properties in the province of Verona in 1998, after spending time in Bordeaux for studies and in the wine trade. His experience included a stage at both Château Smith Haut Lafitte and Domaine de Chevalier.

The Focus on Negrar di Valpolicella and the Estate's Vineyard

Upon his return, Giuseppe surveyed the various parts of the Negrar di Valpolicella property. After initiating several viticulture changes, he focused his attention on a particular vineyard where Corvina grapes were struggling in the damp, heavy clay soil.

Adoption of Merlot and the Creation of CLOS ROARETI

Reflecting on his time in Bordeaux, Giuseppe decided to plant Merlot in the heart of Valpolicella Classico. After some experimental vintages, the first official vintage of 100% Merlot, CLOS ROARETI, was released in 2006.

The Cult Status of CLOS ROARETI

Since its release, CLOS ROARETI has become Guerrieri Rizzardi’s cult wine, often surprising tasters who are unaware that it is a Merlot. The wine is now on allocation and is produced only in vintages where conditions allow for optimum ripening and the ideal acid/sugar balance.

Winemaking Process and Production

CLOS ROARETI is steel fermented and then matured for 12 months in French oak barriques. Production ranges from 1,111 to 2,222 six-bottle cases, depending on the vintage.

Tasting
NOTES

The wine shows black and bramble fruit, dried herbs and toast, tobacco and bit of black olive at the back and a generous lick of oak. Good fruit forward entry showing ripe berries and meaty flavours, well balanced, firm tannins, nice spice and bright acidity with a tingle of VA on the finish. Even in its youth the power of the Merlot shines through here.

Food
PAIRINGS

The sheer depth and power of Merlot fruit would best suit saddle of venison with parsnip purée, or Peking duck.
