2011 Howell Mountain: A Vintage of Perseverance
The 2011 growing season was Herculean, marked by challenging conditions in Napa Valley, which were only amplified by Howell Mountain’s unique climate—situated above the valley’s famous fog line.
A large quantity of rain delayed veraison by an entire month, while summer temperatures remained neither particularly warm nor cold. Early October rains returned, keeping the team on their toes—spraying grapes to prevent mildew while carefully managing ripeness.
The 2011 harvest was the latest and fastest ever at Dunn, spanning just six days—from October 28 to November 2.
The 2011 Howell Mountain Cabernet is defined by black fruit and an ethereal freshness. This is a truly savoury wine, underlined by an earthiness that echoes the native mountain herbs. Over time, the dark fruit has slightly softened, yet the wine retains its chewy tannins and prolonged finish—a testament to the nervy patience required to wait for the perfect moment to harvest amidst a chaotic, wet season.
