The fifth release of this exclusive wine from Familia Torres. The grapes were harvested from a 1.9-hectare vineyard accessed by a winding track. These old vines of Cariñena and Garnacha are hand-wrought into the essence of Priorat; sun-drenched, wild berries, garrigue, baked earth.

Mas de la Rosa

A Historical and Exclusive Estate

Mas de la Rosa is the most exclusive wine produced by Familia Torres, embodying the essence of a unique, secluded vineyard in Porrera. This vineyard, planted over 85 years ago, sits on a steep hillside of llicorella, a slate soil typical of the Priorat region in Catalonia. Reaching nearly 500 meters in elevation at its highest point, the 1.9-hectare vineyard is so remote that it can only be accessed by a narrow, winding, unpaved road. With 5,800 old vines of Cariñena and Garnacha, the vineyard produces a wine of remarkable elegance and finesse, made with utmost respect for its history and terroir.

A Cool, Protected Location for Fine Wine

Located in a cool, elevated area with an east-facing orientation, the vineyard is shaded from early afternoon sunlight, providing a natural coolness that imparts elegance and finesse to the wine. The unique position of the vineyard allows for a slow, well-paced maturation of the fruit, ensuring that the grapes reach perfect ripeness without exposure to intense afternoon heat. This natural cooling effect contributes to the wine's balance and refinement. Certified as organic, the vineyard also employs regenerative practices aimed at fostering healthy soils and biodiversity.

The Legacy of Mas de la Rosa

The estate’s name, Mas de la Rosa, has historical significance. It is said to have been named after Rosa, the wife of a former owner in the mid-18th century. In an act of defiance and bravery, Rosa burned the house to the ground and left in search of a better life, after which locals began referring to the estate as “Rosa’s farmhouse.” This rich history is documented in Josep Simó i Serres' “Crónica de Porrera 1865”. The vineyard was acquired by Familia Torres almost 10 years ago, with the remains of the farmhouse still standing. For many years, Torres had used grapes from the vineyard in their Perpetual Vinyes Velles wine, confirming the exceptional quality year after year. In 2016, Miguel Torres (fifth-generation family member) and winemaker Jordi Foraster decided to craft a wine exclusively from this vineyard to capture its essence and preserve its legacy.

Limited Production and Exceptional Craftsmanship

The production of Mas de la Rosa is highly limited, with only around 1,200 bottles produced for the 2020 vintage—the fifth vintage of this exceptional wine. Crafted with great care and aged for 19 months in a new French oak 1000-litre foudre, the wine is a reflection of its unique terroir. The 2020 vintage experienced a rainy spring followed by a hot, dry summer, which reduced yields but allowed the grapes to mature beautifully. The resulting wine is naturally fresh and full of character, showcasing the purity and finesse of the old vines and the care taken in the winemaking process.

A Masterpiece of Priorat

With its limited production, historical significance, and exceptional craftsmanship, Mas de la Rosa stands as one of the finest expressions of Familia Torres' commitment to quality and their dedication to preserving the legacy of the Priorat region. This is a wine that reflects the history, the land, and the passionate work of the Torres family in creating something truly exceptional.

Tasting
NOTES

A relatively light expression of sun-drenched fruit; pretty red berry fruit with darker styles, wild strawberry, sour red cherry, white pepper and toast. The palate shows more herbaceous notes as well as acidity-driven cranberries and lingonberries, wild berries, garrigue, baked earth and oak notes of charcoal and coffee. A sincere wine with excellent balance, velvet tannins, much elegance, a richly textured mid-palate and an interesting mineral driven persistent finish. True to its roots and clearly reflecting the terroir of Priorat, this is a very high quality wine.

Food
PAIRINGS

This red would pair well with nicely with red meats but it could accompany grilled pork skewers marinated with Mediterranean herbs, or Peruvian chicken (pollo a la brasa) served with aji verde sauce.
