Mahsarto d'Midin

The Eight (Sekizli)

Turkey, South East Anatolia

2020

The Eight (Sekizli)

This red, from South East Anatolia, is made predominantly from the Boğazkere grape. There’s a lovely concentration of fruit, complexity from layers of black and green tea. Sweet spices, a nice juiciness and lots of tobacco and tea-like tannins. Richly textured, this would be perfect with roast rack of lamb.

Origin and Inspiration: Midin Brand

Our brand name Midin comes from the Aramaic name of Öğündük Village. Our logo was created by Albert Tuman as a special design inspired by old Aramaic cuneiform (B.C. 3000). The logo means ‘Midin’s Wine’.

Ancient Winemaking Heritage: Mahsarto Unveiled

A Mahsarto (winery) could be described in Aramaic as a stone (gurno-Aramaic) which has a cavity in the middle where grapes would have been pressed to make wine. Recently, a Mahsarto was found 5km outside of the city of Mardin. It is believed that this Mahsarto was built by Assyrians in the Ancient Ages which contained dozens of wells consisting of carved stones. Nowadays, this place is named “Çelbira” (Forty Wells) and consists of all kinds of different sizes of wells and carved stones. It is believed that this winery was the biggest winery of the Ancient Age.

Historical Town: Ömerli and Mahsarto

The town of Ömerli’s Assyrian name is Mahsarto, located right in the middle of a plateau about 900–1300m above sea level, between Mardin and Midyat. Even though Assyrians left the town, the locals still call themselves ‘Mahsertians.

Renewed Legacy: Midin Mahsarto

An 80-year-old stone vault building was renovated in Midin Mahsarto.

Tasting
NOTES

Lovely concentration of fruit; red cherries and damson with complexity from layers of black and green tea. Sweet spice adds another dimension. There’s a nice juiciness on the palate, lots of tobacco and tea adds to the intensity. The tannins are high and firm with a very dry finish. A unique grape variety, rich in mouthfeel. Good integration of alcohol leads to a warm, persistent finish.

Food
PAIRINGS

This wine would pair quite well with roasted rack of lamb or a seared wagyu steak where the structure and tannins of the wine provide a refreshing sip and also add a subtle yet powerful flavour to the dish. Stronger seasoning like saffron on paella or a heavy barbecue rub on lamb would work with the flavours of this wine.
