Unique Terroir: Edmond Borin’s Tannat Plot
This wine comes from a 1ha plot of Tannat, cultivated in Edmond Borin’s 5ha vineyard in the Sierra de Carapé, Uruguay. All the plants were brought over from France (type A clones) and planted in 2014 and 2015. The vineyard has a north-south orientation, with north-facing vineyards being the sunniest aspect in the southern hemisphere.
Geological Heritage: Soil Analysis
The soil has been extensively analyzed by international geologists, revealing that the vineyard is on rocks from the Zanja del Tigre Formation, belonging to the Lavalleja Group, with an approximate age of 750 million years. This formation consists of a sedimentary sequence of limestones and sandstones that, over time, have undergone metamorphic alterations, giving rise to the marbles, quartzites, and micaceous schists that are now found on the surface.
Crafted Unoaked Elegance: Production Process
Of the limited production from this plot, approximately 5,000l, half is aged in oak barrels, and the other half is held in stainless steel tanks before bottling. This unoaked style reflects the growing trend in the industry and the market that calls for wines without oak and, in general, limited intervention. Without oak, it is possible to express all the fruit potential that Tannat has.
