Craggy Range Pinot Noir, Te Muna Road Vineyard

Great Pinot Noirs often have a reserved intellectual feel. This one from sustainable, family run vineyards in Wairarapa, has a stylish complexity about it. Its charming floral notes and fresh herbs shows Pinot’s potential even in a cooler year. Drink with Anjou pigeon, sweetcorn purée, red onion petals and bacon.

Te Muna's Terroir Unveiled

Two distinct terraces make up the Te Muna vineyard, the top comprising alvi-fulvic soils that are more than 20,000 years old. Exceptional Pinot Noir comes from the upper terrace which produces stylish wines with incredible complexity, a reserved intellectual feel and great length.

Elevating Pinot Noir Excellence

A cool damp spring resulted in low yields, followed by a warm summer that accelerated ripening conditions. The 2021 is deep burgundy in colour with a crimson hue. A plethora of brambled fruits and porcini mushrooms lead the bouquet. With an exciting and vibrant palate, a red-fruited core wraps the velvet tannin with an undeniable depth of flavour—a long road ahead for this wine that will reward with age.

Tasting
NOTES

Complex and refreshing fruit foward Pinot Noir; red berries, smoke and flint aromatics, floral notes and fresh herbs. Shows the potential of a cooler year in New Zealand very nicely with its present acidity, wild mushroom nuances, elegant tannin and amazing length.

Food
PAIRINGS

This would work brilliantly with pigeon but beef stew and sirloin steak would also show off this wine. A non-meat alternative would be mushroom ragout.
